Each year on July 4, the United States celebrates Independence Day. This federal holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain


  • The First Official Celebration: In 1777, the first official Independence Day celebrations took place in Philadelphia, which included fireworks illuminating the sky. 
  • A Federal Holiday: Fourth of July became a federal holiday in 1870.
